Understanding IBS: Symptoms, Root Causes, and Solutions to Better Gut Health

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder, meaning that while the digestive tract appears physically normal under clinical examination, it does not function correctly. It is a chronic condition that does not cause tissue damage, increase the risk of colon cancer, or lead to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
IBS is categorised into three primary types based on stool consistency: IBS-C (constipation-predominant), IBS-D (diarrhoea-predominant), and IBS-M (mixed, involving alternating patterns of both constipation and diarrhoea).
Common signs include recurring abdominal pain or cramping, which is often relieved by bowel movements, along with excessive gas, bloating, mucus in the stool, and a sensation of incomplete evacuation.
The exact cause of IBS remains unknown, but it is widely recognised as a "disorder of the gut-brain interaction." Key contributing factors include gut-brain axis dysregulation, microbiota imbalance, post-infectious factors, chronic stress, anxiety, depression, hormonal shifts, and food intolerances — particularly sensitivity to gluten, dairy, or high-FODMAP foods.
Management focuses on symptom control and improving quality of life. The Low-FODMAP diet is a common protocol used to identify specific food triggers. Increasing fibre intake, staying hydrated, and eating smaller, frequent meals are also recommended.
Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress-reduction techniques such as yoga, meditation, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and gut-directed hypnotherapy are effective in retraining the gut-brain connection.
At The Wellness Lab, we offer specialised treatments including Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), ozone therapy, molecular hydrogen therapy, and photobiomodulation (PBM) to help reduce inflammation, balance microbiota, and alleviate oxidative stress as part of a complementary approach to IBS management.
